Students and Staff said goodbye to Kowloon Junior School Perth Street campus

Thursday 24 March saw a day of celebrations at Kowloon Junior School, Perth Street. Students from both KJS campuses joined for a final outdoor assembly to say goodbye to the 60 year old Perth Street building which is due for demolition in May.

The children performed poems, songs and a rap and reminisced about their time at Perth Street. Celebration Day organiser Colin Page, who has been on the KJS staff for 23 years, amused the gathering by recalling some hair-raising but comical school incidents.

In the afternoon, students now at KGV were invited back for a last look around and a chance to catch up with their old teachers. The day finished with speeches from current and former staff including Gareth Davies the KJS Principal from 1980 to 2004.

Many of the speakers acknowledged the strong bond between old KJS students and their teachers. This was highlighted by the presence of almost 200 KJS alumni for the evening event which included letters of tribute from Perth Street pupils now living overseas.

Over the Easter break, the existing campus will be relocated to its temporary home in Hung Hom (an ex government school building at 68 Gillies Avenue South). Refurbishment works at Hung Hom are well advanced and on target for completion.

Given the unique circumstances and scale of the logistics exercise that needs to be undertaken to relocate the campus, classes for students at Perth Street will be suspended for several days either side of the Easter Break. This will allow teachers and support staff to pack up at Perth Street, relocate to Hung Hom and prepare the new school for students. It should be noted that Perth Street students will be set work by their teachers during these special days to be completed at home.

Key dates are as follows: -

Perth Street closes to students:                 from 13 April 2011

Hung Hom campus opens for students:     starts 5 May 2011

Once the Perth Street campus has been vacated, we plan to start demolition and site preparation works as soon as possible in the final term of the year.
