Congratulations to Kennedy School in Green Projects Competition!
Congratulations to the SEPA Team of Kennedy School who won the second and third prizes of the Green Projects Competition co-organized by the Jane Goodall Institute (Hong Kong) and DiscoveryBox! This very active team had lots of projects ranging from eco-lunch to bird feeder. The students got a micro-garden, books and our very own Mr. H Junior plush toy. It shows the strengths and commitment we have at Kennedy School in environmental work.
Sula and Nell made a bird feeder with a plastic jar, using a craft knife, a string and a wooden chopstick. They followed an idea from a poster and found out how to make from the internet.
Rachel, Ella, Cian, Cameron and Hamzah did the ECO Lunch Project to encourage everyone to bring more sustainable lunches to school. Too much pollution is being caused by lunch boxes coming from packaging and distances food travels. The Year 6 children researched the miles food travels, and Year 3 children the amount of different packaging used. The information was used to create an information chart with a traffic light system showing the best foods to buy and which to avoid.
Jingyu Chew (4C) and her friends in SEPA Club organised a collection box and encouraged everyone to reuse the red packets from Chinese New Year. She wrote an article for the school newsletter so that the whole community would know about it. “If we don’t continue doing this then there will be no more trees, forests and country parks. We can do lots of things with them like making fish out of them and lots of things! Don’t just throw away stuff without thinking! In Malaysia, I made decorations of lanterns, fish and fireworks from the red packets sitting in the cabinet for 3 years! We can have more fresh air, trees and landscape.” She said. Some classes at Kennedy School reused the red packets for decorations and RRR costumes for a show.
Jemima Ridley (6R)’s project was to encourage everyone to use recycled goods. She wrote an email to the publisher of the playtimes magazine asking them to put an advertisement or article tell Hong Kongers that eco-friendly stationary is available, and she wrote to the Kennedy School PTA to ask them to start advertising these products and selling them.
Owen Henderson, Ranae Choi and Jason Leung from 6D tried to reduce the amount of items that could be recycled in the garbage bins. They made two types of posters for both the garbage bins and recycling bins and observed for one week. They saw that quite a lot of recyclable materials were put in the garbage bins. When they started telling people to put things into the right bins there was a dramatic improvement!
Kennedy School has been gaining a few prizes in environmental contests recently. Their Year 3 team won the ECO-Vision Beach Clean Gold Award for largest non-corporate team and Harshta Chandgothia (Year 4) earned Runner-up prize in the ECC Get it Green competition. Please click here to see the poem she wrote. The school also earned Green School Certificate of Appreciation this year.
