ESF students supported Earth Hour

While millions of people from over 130 countries around the world switched off the lights on 26 March at 8:30 pm for one hour, students and staff at ESF schools all over Hong Kong had their own Earth Hour and initiated environmental awareness activities in the week. Let’s see what they have done.

At Clearwater Bay School, all lights and air-conditioning were switched off on Friday from 8:30 to 10:15 am and the whole school is “going beyond the hour” by having an “air-con free week”. Beacon Hill School is adopting the catch phrase “An hour without Power”.  Glenealy School had their lights switched off for one hour.

Sha Tin Junior School had a "No Power Hour".  At Kennedy School, there was an energy / resource-free hour on Friday. All students watched the Earth Hour video, and they were encouraged to bring a sustainable lunch. At Renaissance College, all primary students worked together to reduce energy usage. They kept lights and air conditioning off for the whole day and tried to limit the use of other electrical devices. In the afternoon, Year 5 students participated in greening projects on the rooftop garden and fruit forest. Kowloon Junior School had a dress casual day to wear earth colours. It was not to raise fund but to raise awareness.  During the week, all bins in the school were taken away as a provocation about waste. Click here to see some quotes from Year 4 students.

At Discovery College, 14 to 18 March was the Green Week. Secondary students created and facilitated several activities beginning with a walking school bus from the plaza each morning.  Student art made from natural materials was displayed around the school, and Tuesday was a special “No Electricity Day”.  The week ended with a green dress-up day and raised some fund for WWF.

South Island School had their Earth Hour from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm on Friday. There was also an SIS Earth Hour Fair in the covered playground in the afternoon with loads of eco-conscious, conservation inspired games and food stalls. West Island School had switched off all "non-essential electrical appliances" from 2:15 pm to 3:20 pm and shown the film "The 11th Hour" in the school’s public space during lunch and break.

Sha Tin College’s Earth Hour was 11:00 m to 12:00 noon on Friday. With the help of all the Environmental Action Representatives and staff, non-essential electricity and lights were switched off for an hour. In addition, it was a non-uniform day with the proceeds going to Red Cross Disaster Relief and WWF. To highlight WWF, a number of students and staff were face-painted as pandas. Can you tell who the pandas are?
