Mr Ramanathan was born in Penang, Malaysia and educated around South East Asia until arrival in Hong Kong in 1968. He has lived in Hong Kong ever since.
He received his education at St. Joseph’s College until 1973, when he enrolled to study law at the University of Hong Kong. Graduated in 1976 with Honours and completed PCLL in 1977, he was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1978 and has been in private practice since.
Over the last 20 years, his focus of practice has principally been in the field of Insurance Law, Personal Injuries and Medical Negligence. He also undertakes a variety of Commercial Law work involving both arbitration and mediation.
In 2009, Kumar was appointed Senior Counsel. He was elected Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association in 2010 and elected as its Chairman in 2011. He stepped down in January 2013.
He is presently a member of the Professional Services Advisory Committee of Hong Kong Trade Development Council since April 2013 advising on promoting professional services in Hong Kong to worldwide markets. He is also a director of Hong Kong Mediation Accreditation Authority Association Limited.
He is married with 4 adult children. He is an avid sportsman playing tennis and badminton and the occasional game of golf. He is also a keen bridge player.
