Sha Tin College parents having fun with children's projects
Design and Technology & ICT Faculty ‘Taster Day’ on 18 June 2011
This annual Sha Tin College event has become a real highlight in the school year for parents and Faculty staff and this year was no exception. Twenty parents of Year 6 and Year 8 students were invited into the College to try their hand at some Year 9 projects. This year, our parents were offered the following workshops:
· Jewellery manufacture using the ancient cuttlefish casting technique, lead by DT teacher Jutka Czirok
· iPod or MP3 player docking station (or ‘mini amp’) lead by Head of Faculty Tim Ford
· Film making and production lead by Head of ICT Alan Dickson
The aim of the day is always primarily to have fun designing and making products that really stretch our creative skills and help us to develop some new ones. However, the fun bit has a serious side: we spend the day discussing the meaning of technological learning, its role in the curriculum, higher education, the workplace and the world. Our parents are able to understand better why we teach what we teach in the way that we do. Words can’t really communicate this in a subject in which the best learning is always the result of doing, so the chance to experience the challenges that DT offers really provides the best understanding possible.
Here are a few comments from our parents at the end of another wonderful day together:
“There is nothing better than learning by doing.”
“Knowing my kids are really learning something that they certainly find fun … provides integrated learning experiences that aren't usually offered in conventional subjects”.
“I myself want to go back to school to learn what my kids are learning now!”
“The day was extremely well planned. Everything was great...”
“Very good experience especially allowing us to understand how our kids enjoy their learning and the very, very big satisfaction obtained through the course.”
“Excellent.”
