The traditions of the Lunar New Year are brought beautifully to life in this outstanding student artwork, which has been chosen to appear on the ESF Year of the Dragon card.

The talented artist behind this remarkable design is eight-year-old Ines Lai from ESF Clearwater Bay School.

Her fantastic painting was selected by ESF’s Chief Executive Officer, Belinda Greer, and is the result of our popular ESF-wide creative challenge.

“While judging this year’s ESF Lunar New Year art competition, I had the great pleasure of seeing hundreds of dragons of all shapes and sizes created by our talented children from K1 to Year 13,” said Belinda.

These mythical creatures have really sparked the imaginations of our students and the entries this year have been exceptionally bright and bold.

It was, though, the beautiful artwork painted by Ines Lai that caught my eye with its vibrant colours and captivating composition. Not only has Ines drawn a majestic dragon, but she has also skilfully incorporated the traditions of the Lunar New Year into her intricate design, including exploding firecrackers, celebratory red lanterns and auspicious gold ingots.

Well done to Ines on this tremendous achievement and to all our student participants who have captured the joy of the upcoming festival in their art.”

Belinda made a special visit to Clearwater Bay School to congratulate Ines on winning our art challenge.

Speaking with Belinda about her painting, Ines said: “I love art and enjoy reading books with beautiful illustrations, and all of this inspired me to create my artwork, which is called 舞龙迎春 – Dragon Dance to Welcome the Spring.

I first used a pencil to draw the shape of the dragon, then used red watercolour to apply the base colour, and then used pencils, pens and acrylic paint to draw fireworks, a red lantern and gold ingots. Finally, I used a gold marker for the glittering scales on the body of the dancing dragon.”

With a big smile, Ines added: “I am very happy that my artwork was selected.”

Clearwater Bay School Principal Michael Dewey says the school community is delighted by Ines’ wonderful accomplishment. ”Ines is a talented artist, and her beautiful mixed-media artwork really captures the spirit of this colourful and vibrant celebration. Our card is sure to put a smile on the face of all who receive it.”

We hope you will enjoy sharing our ESF Year of the Dragon card with your community.
