Mr Sam Counsell

Mr Sam Counsell is Head of Middle School English at King George V School. During his seven years at the school, he has also served as Head of Year Seven, leading the transition to a horizontal support model for KGVs youngest students. He has a particular interest in the application of high-quality research to accelerate student progress and attainment. Before KGV, Sam taught in rural and urban UK state high schools for eight years, driving the development of CPD for staff. He came to the classroom after working in PR in central London.

Sam holds a first-class BA degree from Oxford. During his time there, he won a scholarship to study at Princeton for his second year. He later returned to Oxford for his MSc in Learning and Teaching (Distinction), completed whilst teaching full-time. He holds Chartered Teacher status (CTeach) from the Chartered College of Teaching, recognising outstanding classroom practice through rigorous external assessment. He is honoured to contribute to the wider strategic development of ESF through membership of the board.
