Nirmala Rao is Serena H C Yang Professor in Early Childhood Development and Education, Faculty of Education, and Dean, Graduate School, The University of Hong Kong. She is a Developmental and Chartered (Educational) Psychologist and a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and the Hong Kong Psychological Society. She is internationally recognised for her policy-relevant, programme evaluation research conducted in different parts of the world. This research has focused on home, preschool and policy influences on early child development. Recognition of her research is reflected in her publications, awards, requests to provide technical expertise and invitations to serve on high-level committees concerned with child development and education. Professor Rao has been a consultant/expert for UNICEF, UNESCO, the World Bank and the WHO. She also has leadership roles in international professional organisations which aim to promote the well-being of young children through research and advocacy efforts.
