Bradbury School Wins Gold Award for Commitment to Sustainability

Congratulations to Bradbury School for winning a gold award at the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (HKAEE). This prestigious award from the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) recognises the school’s outstanding sustainability initiatives from recycling and water conservation to solar power schemes and waste reduction. The HKAEE judging committee describes the award as being “in recognition of the great efforts Bradbury School exerted in adopting environmental practices and management.”

Winning the award was not easy! It took Bradbury School almost a year to complete all the necessary steps. Step one involved Principal Kate Gower and her team submitting detailed reports about the fantastic projects that are supporting student engagement and learning around sustainability at Bradbury School. They included:

  • Creating three different clubs – EcoDudes, Energy Monitors and Peelies – to increase students’ awareness of environmental protection in terms of recycling work, energy consumption and handling of food waste.
  • Running environmental education programmes for students, such as visiting the Lohas Park landfill in order to understand more about our overflowing landfills, studying farm-to-table and growing their own food in the organic garden.
  • Installing an electric food waste decomposer to process food waste and engage Year 6 students to record the weekly collection data.
  • Requiring the school lunch caterer to provide lunch in reusable containers.

A member of the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) then visited the school to evaluate their application. The final step was a meeting with the judging committee during which the team gave a presentation that reflected Bradbury School’s unwavering commitment to zero waste and sustainability.

We are so incredibly proud of Bradbury School’s remarkable achievement! “It was a whole school effort inspired by passion, commitment and the determination to live their values and make a difference,” says Kate.
