English Schools Foundation welcomes new Chairman

The English Schools Foundation (ESF) is delighted to announce the election of Mr Carlson Tong as the new Chairman of its Board, succeeding Professor Felice Lieh Mak who stood down in March 2011.

Hong Kong born and bred, Carlson has extensive experience in leading an international professional firm. He is a UK chartered accountant and a Hong Kong CPA. He joined KPMG UK in 1979 after qualifying, and returned to Hong Kong in 1985. He was elected as Chairman of KPMG in China and Hong Kong in 2007 and became Asia Pacific Chairman and a member of the global board in 2009. During his term, he has successfully steered the organisation through the turmoil of the global financial crisis. In April 2011, he retired from KPMG.

Carlson has been actively involved in the community and has a deep interest in the well-being of Hong Kong young people. To name a few of his recent voluntary commitments, he is a committee member of the University Grants Committee, Chairman of the Employees’ Compensation Insurance Levies Management Board, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Institute and was a Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.

Carlson says of his appointment: "On behalf of ESF, I would like to thank Professor Lieh Mak for her leadership over the past seven years and for taking ESF to new heights. This is a challenging moment to be taking on the role of Chairman of ESF.  Two of my children were educated at ESF schools from primary to year 13 and I am committed to ensuring that ESF will continue to provide the community with quality education that is maintained at world standards.”

Heather Du Quesnay, Chief Executive Officer welcomes Carlson on board. “With Carlson’s distinguished career history and management experience, we are confident that ESF has the leadership to sustain its current success and to face the new challenges ahead. We look forward to working with Carlson.”
