ESF K1 & Year 1 Admissions Update

Dear Parents and Guardians

Earlier this year ESF announced that we would be moving to become a ‘through-train’ education system. As such, children joining an ESF Kindergarten in K1 from August 2020, who can benefit from a mainstream English-medium education, will be guaranteed a Year 1 place at an ESF school. Please see the announcement here.

This is a great development. It means that students can access a world-class ESF education with greater continuity, giving parents certainty about their child’s education journey from kindergarten to the end of secondary school.

At present, parents who already have a child at an ESF school receive what is known as ‘sibling priority’ for any of their other children who are seeking entry to an ESF school. With the move to the through-train system, there is an important update to be aware of:

  • Students starting K1 at an ESF Kindergarten in August 2020 will be allocated a Year 1 place in an ESF school ahead of other applicants, including siblings of existing ESF students.
  • ESF families will continue to benefit from ‘sibling priority.’ However, spaces for Year 1 entry will be reduced for ‘sibling priority’ since ESF Kindergarten students will be allocated a place before any other applicants are considered.
  • For example, this means that if you have a child born in 2017 and an older child already within an ESF school, the best way to ensure your younger child has a Year 1 place in an ESF school is to enrol them in an ESF Kindergarten in August 2020 for a K1 start.

Families applying for a K1 place for their child born in 2017, to start at an ESF Kindergarten in August 2020, will be the first cohort to benefit from our ESF through-train system. Applications for these Kindergarten places will open from 1 September 2019 via the ESF website.

In the meantime, further information, including FAQs are available on the ESF website here:
